Mercedes-AMG GT R Officially Discontinued After 2021

The wait for the release of the Mercedes-AMG GT R for sale has been a highly anticipated one for fans of the Mercedes brand. While the official specs are still under wraps, it is expected to retain the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine as others in the GT R family. The difference will be the level of power that is finessed out of the engine. The GT R Black Series model is expected to generate around 700 ponies, which places it in direct competition with the likes of the Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the McLaren 720S. An official representative from Mercedes-AMG also recently revealed that this will be the fastest accelerating model yet! It is also important to note that this will be the first AMG model to receive the Black Series badge since 2013. An official price has not been released, although it will have a price tag greater than that of the GT R, which starts at just under $160,000. As far as the exterior, testing at Nurburgring has shown that we can expect to see improved aerodynamic components, a new exhaust system, large rear wing and an all-around more encroaching appearance. Other alterations expected are the inclusion of rear-wheel drive versus the former all-wheel drive and an upgraded suspension.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Neither the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) nor the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) has crash-tested the 2021 GT. But the GT lineup is available with a variety of driver-assistance technology. Key safety features include:

  • Standard forward-collision warning and automated emergency braking
  • Available blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning
  • Available adaptive cruise control

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

Inside, Mercedes provides superb build quality, and the materials are in line with the GT’s big sticker price. The cabin is the opposite of roomy, but the driving position is perfect, with the capacitive-touch controls for the car’s many performance settings placed comfortably within reach on the center console. The 12.3-inch fully digital gauge cluster is terrific, too. Similar to how Porsche does things, Mercedes puts the GT’s drive-mode selector dial on the steering wheel where it should be. Roadsters have a power-operated top that drops in seconds. And with 10 cubic feet of cargo space, the GT’s trunk is twice as large as the Porsche 911’s.
