How to Get Hair Dye Out of Wood – Method # 1

This first do-it-yourself solution involves using baking soda, detergent, and water.

  1. In a bowl, mix 2 cups of warm water, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing detergent together.
  2. Drench a clean cloth in the solution you just mixed.
  3. Rub the stained area of the wood floor with the cloth until the hair dye mark disappears.

Other Methods to Try

ESalon advises colorists to try a cleaning mixture of one part baking soda to one part peroxide to remove hair color stains. It should be allowed to bubble until the stain starts to lighten. Then, it can be wiped off with a damp cloth or sponge.

A similar concoction is 1 tablespoon of OxiClean and 1 tablespoon of water. Combine until it looks milky and then use a sponge to rub the stain in a circular motion. A mixture of 1/2 cup vinegar and 1 tablespoon baking soda may also remove the dye.

When using baking soda or OxiClean, rub gently since both are abrasive. You do not want to damage the floor. It is better to work slowly and carefully to remove the hair color stain. Once the stain is gone, take a clean cloth and wipe away any residue. Dry the floor using a soft, clean towel.
